Case Study: The Wandering Hedonist – Brand and Website
Client
The Wandering Hedonist
Role
Sole designer/developer.
Responsibilities
UX design, brand, print design, WordPress site creation and maintenance.
Duration
1 month initial design and development. Ongoing upkeep.
Summary
Site design and branding for a food and travel lifestyle publication.
The Project
Create a brand and WordPress website for a three year travel experiment focusing on traditional food culture and history, travel writing, and travel photography. Site will primarily feature blog style publications in chronological order.
Theme
Theme centers on literary travel writing and quality bespoke photography instead of the low-target writing and sourced images found on other ubiquitous ad-focused travel websites.
Focus
Site focused on a few related topics:
- Traditional food and beverage culture and history.
- Long term travel lifestyle.
- High-end Chef-focused restaurant reviews.
- Travel and food photography.
- Literary style travel and concept writing.
- Traditional food and food travel guides.
- Art, particularly local street art.
Brand
Brand aimed at a clean aesthetic with a literary feel. Something to elevate the content above basic ad-centric travel blogs. Referential to classic New Yorker or National Geographic style publications.
Business Cards
Business cards were used for networking with casual contacts, people and businesses featured in articles, and high-quality take-aways to feature site images. Cards have the same back with 50 different photographic fronts. Selection was used as a way to open conversation. Cards use stiff cardstock with gloss on both sides and rounded corners.
Site Design
Site design leans heavily on the quality of travel and food images. Primarily black, white, and grey text and design elements with a bright green link and key color for some levity.
